Why Visit Albania
For curious and active travellers, Albania is a true paradise — a country still relatively new on the tourism map. It offers ancient monuments, rich history, unspoiled nature, warm hospitality, and remarkable religious tolerance. So why not set off on a great trip and discover not only its untouched landscapes, but the charm of the entire country — a place you'll fall in love with and want to return to again and again.
For many years, Albania was largely overlooked as a travel destination. For decades, it stood as an example of one of the strictest communist regimes in history. Today, however, it is a country with nearly 5,000 years of heritage, shaped by Greeks, Romans, Venetians, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Illyrians. Come and experience this fascinating blend of cultures for yourself.
Why is it worth discovering this country?
1. No crowds of tourists. You don't have to worry about long queues at popular historical sites.
2. Compared to much of Europe, the Balkans are still affordable. Albania will pleasantly surprise you with low costs for food, transport, and services.
3. Albanians are sincere, kind, and communicative. They value family and friendship very strongly and treat visitors with great respect. Albania also has a lower rate of petty crime than cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, or Paris, and violent crime is extremely rare. Tourism holds great potential here, which is why locals genuinely want you to feel welcome and well looked after.
4. The country is safe. Even though tourism is still developing, travelling in Albania is as safe as travelling anywhere else in Europe.
5. Stunning mountains and nature. Over 70% of the landscape is covered by mountains, dotted with scenic lakes and waterfalls. You can enjoy breathtaking sunsets, stable sunny weather — up to 250 days a year — and a long coastline on the Adriatic with sandy beaches and lagoons. Further south lies the Ionian Sea, known for its spectacular beaches, coves, and dramatic cliffs.
6. Delicious local cuisine made from fresh, often organic ingredients — and at great prices. Many agricultural products come directly from local farmers. Albanian gastronomy is influenced by Italian and Greek cuisine. Coffee culture is strong — people enjoy coffee several times a day, and it's excellent and affordable, usually between €0.70 and €1.10.
7. Infrastructure has improved significantly. Today, you don't need to worry about driving. The main roads connecting cities like Tirana, Shkodra, and southern towns such as Berat, Gjirokastër, Korçë, and Saranda are in good condition.
8. Albanians are proud of their country. They are open and friendly, and often show genuine interest in visitors. They value hospitality and are quick to offer help if you need anything. English and Italian are widely spoken, and German is understood occasionally. You can pay by card in most places, but it's useful to carry cash — lek or euros — especially outside major tourist areas.
